The Chega party has launched a scathing attack on Portugal's Minister of Internal Administration, Luís Neves, during his visit to Madeira. The minister was attending the 148th anniversary of the Regional Command of the Public Security Police (PSP) in Madeira, a visit that has sparked significant controversy.
Chega has accused Luís Neves of using the ceremonial occasion to address political controversies and attack the party and its leader André Ventura. This action was deemed "inadmissible" by the party, which expressed strong disapproval of the minister's approach.
Francisco Gomes, a Chega deputy, criticized Neves' presence in Madeira, suggesting it should be his last official act as minister. Gomes argued that Neves' tenure has brought embarrassment to the country and the security forces, calling for urgent leadership changes within the internal security framework of Portugal.
Gomes highlighted several persistent issues within the PSP in Madeira, including labor abuses, psychological pressures on officers, and a chronic shortage of personnel. He pointed out the difficulties faced by Madeiran officers stationed on the mainland who wish to return home, emphasizing the need for more resources and better management.
The deputy's criticisms reflect a broader dissatisfaction with the current state of security affairs in the region, urging immediate reforms to bolster the safety and well-being of both officers and the public.
"Portugal needs to rid itself of this sinister figure," Francisco Gomes stated, emphasizing the urgency for change in leadership.
