Chega Criticizes Delays and Cost Overruns in Porto Santo Health Unit Project

The Chega party, led by Hugo Nunes, has raised serious concerns about the construction delays and budget overruns in the new Local Health Unit (ULS) in Porto Santo. The project, crucial for local healthcare infrastructure, has seen its completion date pushed back from September 2025 to the summer of 2028, with costs escalating from an initial €18 million to €35.5 million.
During his visit to Porto Santo, Hugo Nunes criticized the Regional Government's handling of the project, highlighting the adverse effects on the local community who remain without adequate healthcare facilities. He dismissed excuses related to external conflicts, attributing delays to poor planning and execution.
"Passing from €18 million to €35.5 million and delaying the delivery by three years is not an adjustment, it's a blow to public finances and a lack of respect for residents," stated Hugo Nunes.
The health unit is designed to feature 5,250 square meters of space, including emergency facilities, 17 consultation rooms, 16 inpatient beds, 8 dialysis stations, and 20 beds in the continuous care wing. However, the consistent failure to complete tenders raises questions about competence and market conditions.
Nunes also criticized the government's promises of housing for medical staff, noting the absence of concrete plans or projects. "There's no study, no project, no bricks," he remarked, emphasizing the need for actionable solutions rather than political posturing.
The delays and financial mismanagement have implications for both residents and the island's tourism sector, which relies on robust healthcare infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of visitors.
