In a recent political initiative held at the site of the former Garachico primary school, the CDU, led by regional coordinator Edgar Silva, has leveled serious accusations against the Madeira Regional Government. Silva claims that the government is responsible for the deterioration and neglect of public infrastructure across the region.
According to Silva, numerous public buildings, particularly schools, have been left to decay, effectively turning them into scrapyards. This issue is not isolated to Garachico but extends to other areas such as Câmara de Lobos and beyond.
The CDU has highlighted the Garachico school as a prime example of governmental neglect. Despite previous proposals to repurpose the building for public housing or as a community center for the elderly, it remains unused and in a state of disrepair. Meanwhile, the government is reportedly paying high rents for alternative facilities.
Silva's critique reflects broader concerns regarding the efficient use of public funds and the need for a strategic plan to revitalize and utilize public spaces effectively. The CDU argues for a comprehensive strategy to prevent further waste of public resources and to enhance regional development through better use of existing infrastructure.
This is a clear case of governmental negligence and a lack of vision for the future of our public spaces," Silva stated during his address.
