CDS-PP Câmara de Lobos has called for EU funding to preserve vineyards in the municipality as agricultural land is lost to construction.

CDS-PP Câmara de Lobos leaders visited the Festa das Vindimas in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos on the morning of September 12. The party defended a programme supported by European Union funds to help preserve vineyards in the municipality.

Lídio Aguiar said vineyards are more than an agricultural activity and have landscape, cultural and economic value. The party warned that construction is causing the loss of agricultural land.

Aguiar proposed compensating farmers or producers who keep their vineyards in operation. The proposal also calls for encouraging wine houses to acquire agricultural land and invest in vineyard maintenance and recovery.

He said preserving vineyards means preserving the landscape, traditions and part of the identity of Estreito and Câmara de Lobos.

Lídio Aguiar said the proposed mechanism would help prevent agricultural land from being abandoned and protect one of Estreito's most characteristic images.
