Calheta Celebrates New Folklore Group Headquarters

The picturesque municipality of Calheta, located on Madeira Island, celebrated a significant cultural milestone with the inauguration of a new headquarters for the Associação Grupo de Folclore da Calheta. The official opening took place yesterday afternoon in Lombada dos Marinheiros, within the parish of Fajã da Ovelha.
The building, which underwent extensive renovation and remodeling, was previously shared with the local Social Center. However, following a request from the folklore group, the Calheta municipality relocated the Social Center to the former Raposeira School, allowing the Group of Folklore to utilize the space exclusively.
The inauguration event was graced by notable figures, including the Regional Director of Culture, Dr. Medeiros Gaspar, the President of the Municipal Chamber of Calheta, Dr. Doroteia Leça, and the President of the Group of Folklore, Ivone Sousa. During the ceremony, Ivone Sousa expressed her gratitude towards the municipality for their continued support, highlighting the importance of such gestures in promoting local culture.
The event also marked the 20th anniversary of the folklore group, adding a layer of significance to the celebration. The Regional Director of Culture commended the successful partnerships between the folklore group and the municipal authorities, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural traditions and engaging younger generations.
