The annual pilgrimage from Funchal to Machico, known as the Peregrinação do Senhor dos Milagres, is set to occur on October 8th. This event is a significant religious tradition in Madeira, drawing numerous devotees who walk to fulfill promises and participate in the religious festivities held in Machico.
Organized by Paula Garcia, the pilgrimage will commence at 8 AM from the Jardins do Campo da Barca in Funchal. Participants are encouraged to register between September 1st and 30th by contacting 965 845 426. This pilgrimage not only serves as a spiritual journey but also highlights the rich cultural heritage of Madeira, offering participants a chance to engage with the island's traditions.
The journey from Funchal to Machico is approximately 23 kilometers, and participants are advised to prepare for a day-long walk. The route offers stunning views of Madeira’s landscapes, providing an opportunity for both spiritual reflection and appreciation of nature.
The Festa do Senhor dos Milagres is one of the most celebrated religious events in Madeira. It commemorates the miraculous preservation of a crucifix during a flood in the 19th century, which is now venerated in Machico.
