Fourteen hectares of Blandy family estate at 500 metres above Funchal, camellia avenues and a sunken garden and 650-odd labelled species, free for anyone under 15.

The case for bringing children is emptiness: reviewers who have done Monte Palace and the Botanical Garden keep saying they had this one almost to themselves, which with a small child is worth more than any attraction. Against it, nothing here is built for a child - no play area, no fish to feed, no cable car - and a bored six-year-old will be bored for the full two hours the estate deserves. The broad gravel avenues take a pushchair; the steeper side paths do not.

Worth knowing: Bus 37 stops at the gate but getting back is the problem - book the return taxi before you go in, or plan on the walk up to the main-road stop.

Getting there
