Whaling history, life-size whales and stereoscopic 3D films in a purpose-built museum at Caniçal - the island's best museum for children by a distance.
What children remember is the 3D glasses and the walk-through mock submarine; what makes it work for the adults is that the whaling history underneath is properly told. Families report an hour and a half to two hours without the child flagging, which no other museum here manages. Labels and audio guide in several languages.
Worth knowing: Closed Mondays, and that is the most common wasted drive on this coast. Ask for the film times when you buy the ticket and build the visit round them.

Prices
Adult 10 €, child 5 €, free under 6, ages 12-17 and students 8.50 €, over-65s 8.50 €. Family ticket - two adults and a child up to 11 - 20 €.
