Aquário da Madeira

Porto Moniz

  • Indoors
  • Ages 2-10
  • Children from 4 €
  • Just turn up

Twelve tanks of Madeiran and Macaronesian sea life - groupers, moray eels, more than ninety native species - inside a rebuilt 18th-century fort by the Porto Moniz lava pools.

Small, dark and indoors, which is exactly its use: it is the dry half of a Porto Moniz day, kept back for the moment the cloud comes down over the north coast. Forty-five minutes covers it, and the complaint reviewers repeat is the ticket price against twelve tanks. A child over about ten who has seen a mainland oceanarium will be unimpressed.

Worth knowing: Do the lava pools first and save this for the rain. Coach tours fill the town's parking mid-morning. Both of the aquarium's own web addresses are dead - the municipality's page is the live one.

Getting there

Prices and opening times change without notice, and on this island they change often. Everything here carries the date it was checked in our research notes; if a place has moved or closed, tell us and we will fix it.
