Three rooms of uniforms, swords and weaponry from the 18th century on, inside the São Lourenço fortress on the Funchal seafront.
For a child the fortress is the point - walls, courtyards and cannon on the Avenida Zarco - and the museum inside is small, army-run and entirely conventional: cases, Portuguese captions, nothing interactive. Three rooms means it is over before a young child gets restless. Forty-five minutes, combined with the marina rather than made into an outing.
Worth knowing: It closes at 16:30 and all weekend, which is the tightest window of any museum in central Funchal. The palace also runs separate guided tours of the state rooms - ask at the gate, they are not the museum.

No admission price is published. Military museums in Portugal are often free, but the Culture Directorate's page for this one names no figure, so do not count on it.
