The island's ethnography museum in Ribeira Brava, built round a working water mill and a sugar-cane press, with fishing, weaving, wine and wicker laid out as processes.
Better with children than the name suggests, because it shows how things were made rather than when they happened - the mill turns, the press is there to be walked round. Its education service runs participatory sessions rather than tours and schools rate them, so it is worth asking what is on. Labelling is mostly Portuguese. The seafront and a playground are five minutes downhill.
Worth knowing: Closed Sunday and Monday both, and on 29 June for the town holiday. Saturday runs on a split, shutting from 12:30 to 13:30. It is also one of the few museums outside Funchal you can reach by bus - SIGA routes 4, 6, 7, 80, 107, 115, 127, 139 and 146 all stop in the town.

Prices
Youth 13-25 3 €, adult 26-64 6 €, over-65s 3 €, groups of six or more 4 € a head, family 10 €. The official tariff has no band below 13, so ask at the desk what a younger child pays.
