The 1897 power station that lit Funchal, kept as a museum with its turbines and generators still standing in the hall.
Machinery on a scale that impresses a child who has only ever seen a plug socket, and one of the few genuinely hands-on stops in the city, with switching and lighting demonstrations. It is quiet compared with the old-town museums. Panels lean Portuguese with patchy English, so a parent ends up narrating, and it is dry for anyone under about six.
Worth knowing: Closed all day Sunday and Monday, and it shuts for lunch from 12:30 to 14:00 - the combination catches out more families than anything else here. Family tickets exist and are not advertised at the door: ask.

Prices
Adult 5 €, student, youth and senior 3 €. Family of two adults and one young person 12 €, two adults and two young people 14 €, each further family member 2 €. Free during International Museum Day week, 18-21 May. The family rates come from the city tourism listing rather than the museum, so confirm them at the desk.
