About twenty thousand toys - British, Portuguese, French and German, from the late 19th century on - behind glass on the second floor of the Armazém do Mercado.

It is a nostalgia museum first and a children's museum second: nothing is playable, everything is in a case, and under-fives who arrive expecting to touch are frustrated within minutes. The Star Wars figures, the die-cast cars and the motorbikes carry most six- to ten-year-olds for an hour, and the grandparents recognise as much as the children do. Cases are densely packed and the labelling is thin.

Worth knowing: Closed Sunday. The family ticket - two adults and two children for 12 € - is cheaper than four singles and is worth asking for. The museum is on the second floor, so check the lift if you have a pushchair; the Armazém courtyard below has a café and shade.

Getting there
