The intact nineteenth-century Vicente photographic studio, kept as a museum, and the only place in Funchal running darkroom workshops for children.
The reason to bring a child is the education service: black-and-white analogue photography sessions and photography competitions, not just a guided tour. The glass plates and old cameras give a physical hook that the permanent display alone does not - on its own it is a quiet adult hour and will not hold a child who was not already interested. The workshops are programmed rather than run on demand, which rarely fits a one-week holiday.
Worth knowing: Email the education service before you travel and ask what is running that week; the walk-in visit is the lesser half of what is here. It is central, step-free, and closed on Sunday and Monday.

Prices
Family ticket - at least one adult and one child - 10 €. Youth 13-25 3 €, adult 26-64 6 €, over-65s 3 €, groups of six or more 4 € a head. Temporary exhibitions are free.
