A free, small archaeology museum on Praça Colombo, built over the excavated foundations of a 15th-century sugar merchant's house.
Sugar is the reason Funchal exists, and this is where that gets explained, standing on the dig that produced the objects - moulds, coins, everyday ceramics, which children read better than panels. The floor lets you look down into the excavation. It is twenty to forty minutes, not an outing, and the labelling is Portuguese-led.
Worth knowing: Free, central and a minute from the cathedral, which makes it the best default when a plan collapses - but only Monday to Friday. Do not walk down there at the weekend or on a public holiday.
