Naturalist-led birdwatching run by two biologists since 2004, of which exactly two products work with a child: the half-day land tour and the birds-and-cetaceans boat out of Machico.

Listed mainly so a parent can tell the child-suitable trips from the rest. The half-day tour pairs the island's endemics - Trocaz pigeon, Madeiran firecrest - with laurel forest, so a child who tires of birds still gets a walk, and the Machico boat has the advantage that the animals surface. The Zino's Petrel pelagic and the night expedition are late, cold and physically demanding, and are not children's trips at any age.

Worth knowing: Ask by name for the half-day birdwatching or the Machico birds-and-cetaceans boat, and say the child's age. This is scopes and patience; a child who needs constant activity will be miserable.

Land birdwatching runs all year. The Zino's Petrel work follows the breeding season, roughly spring to late summer.
