The regional botanical garden on the Bom Sucesso hillside, with a cactus terrace, the patterned carpet beds, an aviary of parrots and macaws, and its own cable car down from Monte.

It is flatter and shorter than Monte Palace and reviewers report managing it with a pushchair, which is the practical reason to choose it with small children. The aviary is what a child remembers, though some visitors find the birds visibly cramped and say so - be ready to explain it or steer round it. Gardens hold most children for an hour, not the full two the labels deserve.

Worth knowing: The hours are the weak point: the visitor timetable and the office timetable published by the institute do not agree, so phone before you set out rather than trusting either.

Prices

10 € from age 12, 3 € for ages 6 to 12, free under 7, since 1 January 2026. One ticket covers the gardens, the Natural History Museum and the temporary exhibitions. Madeira residents go free.
