A 360-degree projection hall where the island's landscapes run over the walls and the floor, a lab of installations a child plays with, and a seated VR flight over Pico do Arieiro, all indoors in the old Cinema João Jardim.

The surest wet-day plan in Funchal: two 15-minute films in the hall, where children lie on the floor as flowers and clouds pour over them, then the Lab with its sound wall, light slide and virtual creek, which is built to be touched. The VR Club takes children from six and fits over glasses. Allow 45 to 60 minutes; the hall is dark and loud at moments, so a toddler who dislikes either may want the Lab alone.

Worth knowing: Tickets are sold by time slot online, and the last entry is an hour before closing. The entrance is on the third floor of Rua dos Aranhas 98, a few minutes' walk from the Sé.

Getting there

Prices and opening times change without notice, and on this island they change often. Everything here carries the date it was checked in our research notes; if a place has moved or closed, tell us and we will fix it.
