The yellow 17th-century fort above Barreirinha - ramparts, cannon and an archaeology museum - closed, with access to the on-site restaurant only.

The Regional Culture Directorate's own page says temporariamente encerrada and gives no reopening date, while the tourist board, the map apps and most guidebooks still list the fort as an attraction, which is how families keep walking up there. Open, it was the best fort-shaped hour in Funchal for a child: real ramparts to climb, real cannon, and cases of things dug out of the city. Do not plan around it.

Worth knowing: The restaurant inside is still reachable, and that is the only reason to make the climb from the Zona Velha at the moment. Phone the directorate before going if the museum is the point.

The operator publishes no opening hours. Phone before you drive.

Prices

No ticket is being sold. The published tariff, not currently in force, was 5 € for 13-25s, 10 € for adults, 5 € over 65, 5 € a head for groups of six or more and 18 € for a family.
