The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued multiple weather alerts for Madeira, warning of intense rainfall, snow in mountain regions, and rough seas.

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued several weather alerts for the Madeira region due to expected adverse conditions, including heavy rainfall, snowfall in the mountainous areas, and rough sea conditions.

Weather Warnings in Detail

The forecasts warn of northwesterly waves reaching heights of 5 to 6 meters, potentially reaching up to 10 meters along the North Coast. This has prompted an orange alert for maritime agitation, effective from midnight to 9 a.m. on March 19. Additionally, showers, occasionally heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, are expected between the evening of March 17 and the morning of March 18.

Snowfall in Mountain Regions

An additional yellow alert has been issued for snowfall, with predictions of up to 10 cm of snow accumulation in areas above 1,500 meters. This alert is in effect for 24 hours from 9 a.m. on March 18 to 9 a.m. on March 19.

Impact and Safety Precautions

Residents and tourists are advised to exercise caution, particularly in mountainous areas and coastal regions. The rough sea conditions could affect maritime activities, while the heavy rainfall and potential snow could lead to disruptions in transportation and outdoor events.

IPMA emphasizes the importance of staying informed about the latest weather updates and following safety instructions from local authorities.

Understanding Madeira's Weather Alerts

Madeira's weather can be unpredictable, with sudden changes due to its mountainous terrain and oceanic climate. The IPMA uses a color-coded alert system to communicate potential weather impacts, with yellow indicating potential disruptions and orange signifying more severe conditions.
