Vânia Jesus Takes Madeira's Transport Concerns to Lisbon

Vânia Jesus, a PSD-Madeira deputy, recently addressed the Minister of Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, during a parliamentary session in Lisbon. Her focus was on pressing transport concerns for Madeira, including air, sea, and mobility issues.

Jesus emphasized the importance of maintaining strategic connections between Madeira and the mainland, as well as other regions vital to the island's economy and community. A significant point of discussion was the privatization of TAP, the national airline, and the necessity of preserving the Lisbon hub and strategic links to the Autonomous Regions, PALOP (Portuguese-speaking African countries), and the diaspora.

She highlighted the need to safeguard Madeira's specific requirements in the ongoing review of the wind limits at Madeira's airport. A new wind detection system has been in pre-operation since November, and Jesus inquired about any available reports or interim assessments that could influence operational limitations at the airport.

In addition to aviation, port operations were discussed, particularly the challenges faced by Autonomous Regions during disruptions in cargo handling. Jesus proposed the establishment of a priority corridor for cargo destined for these regions, especially during strikes or congestion. She also brought attention to the double penalties Madeira faces under the European carbon emission trading system, stressing the need for policy adjustments to account for the island’s unique logistical challenges.
