Storm Bruna: two cruise ships cancel their Funchal calls
Cunard's Queen Anne and P&O's Azura will not stop in Funchal on Sunday and Monday, and the Mein Schiff 7 came a day early to beat the weather.
Two cruise ships have dropped their calls at the port of Funchal because of the bad weather brought by the depression Bruna. The Queen Anne was due on Sunday and the Azura on Monday.
The Queen Anne, of the Cunard line, is on a 12-day cruise that starts and ends in Southampton. It changed its itinerary and will no longer call at Funchal, according to JM Madeira, which cites the ports authority APRAM.
The Azura, of P&O Cruises, was coming from Tenerife in the Canary Islands. It will take another route to avoid the rough seas.
The Mein Schiff 7 was due in Funchal on Saturday but brought its call forward because of the forecast and spent Friday night in port. The ship, with 2,908 passengers and 1,022 crew, was due to leave at 12:00 on Saturday for Santa Cruz de La Palma in the Canary Islands.
IPMA, the Portuguese weather service, has orange and yellow warnings in force for rain, wind and sea conditions. It forecasts gusts of up to 130 km/h in the highlands, especially on 7 November, and waves of 3.5 to 4.5 metres on the south coast of Madeira from the afternoon of 8 November.
This site reported the warnings earlier today: Orange warnings for rain and wind across Madeira and Porto Santo on Saturday.
