Madeira Island has recently witnessed a spate of accidents that have disrupted daily life and raised concerns among both residents and tourists. The most recent incident occurred on March 9, 2026, involving a chain collision on the highway near Boa Nova, in the direction of Caniço-Funchal.
Chain Collision on the Highway
At approximately 7 PM, a chain collision involving three vehicles took place, resulting in two individuals sustaining minor injuries. The victims, a woman in her 40s and a man in his 60s, were promptly attended to by the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses and transported to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. Although a vehicle for extrication was on site, it was not required for this incident.
Earlier Accidents Raise Alarm
In another event on March 7, a car overturned in the Pestana Júnior tunnel, also leading to two injuries. A 25-year-old male, initially trapped inside the vehicle, was rescued with the help of two nurses from the Portuguese Red Cross. He was later hospitalized with a cut on his arm. Additionally, a 39-year-old man suffered from head pain and was also taken to the hospital.
The same day, a tragic incident occurred in Camacha, where a 52-year-old man choked to death despite the swift response of the Bombeiros Sapadores de Santa Cruz. Efforts to resuscitate him proved unsuccessful.
Workplace Safety Concerns
A major workplace accident on February 3, 2026, further compounded the situation when a construction worker was severely injured after being hit by several sacks of cement. The worker, in his 30s, was rendered unconscious and taken to the hospital, highlighting ongoing concerns about occupational safety standards in Madeira.
