PS Applauds Government's U-turn in Seixal, Urges Swift Action

The Socialist Party (PS) of Madeira has expressed approval for the Regional Government's recent decision to proceed with safety improvements near the expressway in Seixal. This move comes after significant pressure from local officials and the community, highlighting the need for immediate action to prevent accidents caused by frequent rockfalls in the area.
CĂ©lia Pessegueiro, the PS-Madeira president, emphasized that this policy reversal was a direct result of persistent efforts by the Porto Moniz Mayor, the Socialist Party, and the local population. The decision follows a series of hazardous incidents, including a recent severe injury caused by falling rocks, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
Despite the government's commitment, Pessegueiro remains cautious, urging that the announced plans must not remain mere intentions. She criticized previous governmental priorities, noting that funds have often been diverted to less critical projects, such as golf courses, over essential safety infrastructure.
The proposed solution involves constructing a false tunnel to protect motorists and pedestrians from rockfalls. While the announcement is a positive step, Pessegueiro insists on transparency and accountability, demanding the publication of preliminary studies and timely commencement of the construction.
Political tensions have also surfaced, with accusations of political opportunism from Pedro Rodrigues, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, directed at Pessegueiro. In response, she challenged the government to demonstrate tangible progress rather than engaging in political blame games.
