Pedro Coelho, a prominent Madeira politician, is pressing for increased POSEI funding and a renewal of the black scabbard fish fleet, vital for the island's economy.

Pedro Coelho, a key political figure from Madeira, has taken a firm stance on two critical issues affecting the region's economy and sustainability: the POSEI financial package and the renewal of Madeira's black scabbard fish fleet. These topics were at the forefront during a recent parliamentary hearing with the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries.

The Importance of POSEI

The Programme of Options Specifically Relating to Remoteness and Insularity (POSEI) is a crucial financial tool for the Autonomous Regions of Portugal, including Madeira. It aims to support the unique challenges faced by these regions due to their geographical isolation.

Recently, the European Parliament showed positive support for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028-2034 by approving an interim report. This report emphasizes the need to fully apply Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which ensures specific funding for Outermost Regions, including Madeira.

Renewal of the Black Scabbard Fish Fleet

The black scabbard fish is not only a staple of the Madeiran diet but also a significant economic resource. Coelho highlighted the urgent need for fleet renewal, which has been stalled at the European level. He advocates for specific quotas and enhanced funding to support the artisanal fishing practices prevalent in Madeira.

Regional Involvement and Economic Impact

Coelho urged the Minister to push against fund centralization, advocating for regional authorities to play a significant role in fund allocation and execution. By ensuring that resources are directed towards Madeira's specific needs, the island can maintain its economic viability and cultural heritage.

It is crucial for Madeira to have a distinct and sufficient allocation within POSEI to protect our local industries and traditions.

Pedro Coelho
