A stray firework ignited a fire in a seventh-floor apartment in Funchal's Monumental Palace, prompting a swift response from local firefighters and residents.

On the evening of December 31, 2025, a fire erupted in a seventh-floor apartment at the Monumental Palace on Rua Velha da Ajuda in Funchal, Madeira. The incident was triggered by a stray firework, sparking flames that consumed various materials on the balcony, including a sofa.

Residents acted quickly, using buckets of water to control the blaze until the arrival of the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal. A total of 13 firefighters and four fire engines were dispatched to the scene to ensure the fire was completely extinguished and to ventilate the apartment.

The use of fireworks is a common tradition during New Year's celebrations in Madeira, known for its spectacular displays that attract tourists from around the world. However, the incident highlights the potential dangers associated with firework mishandling.

No injuries were reported, and the quick action of the residents prevented a more severe outcome. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines when using fireworks, especially in residential areas.
