Madeira will host the Portuguese Navy's celebrations for Navy Day 2026, a significant event that underscores the historical bond between the Navy and the local community. The festivities, scheduled from May 16 to May 24, offer a range of activities open to the public, aiming to showcase the Navy's mission and strengthen its ties with the Madeira residents.
The event will kick off with tours of the NRP Zaire at the Funchal fishing port, running from May 16 to May 20. These tours, held twice daily, provide a unique opportunity for visitors to explore naval vessels and learn about their operations.
On May 17, the Bay of Funchal will host the Navy Day Sailing Regatta for the Álvaro Lopes Trophy, offering a spectacular maritime display. Meanwhile, lighthouse enthusiasts can tour the Ponta do Pargo and São Jorge lighthouses from May 20 to May 24.
Highlighting the community's involvement, an Open Day event with the Clube Naval do Funchal is set for May 23 at Cais de São Lázaro. Attendees can engage in various nautical activities, including sea baptisms with the Funchal Lifeboat Station, providing an interactive maritime experience.
Concluding the month-long celebrations, the Madeira Regional Canoeing Association will host a commemorative canoeing regatta on May 30 and 31. This event will start from the Funchal port and feature a trophy ceremony at 12:30 PM.
While major festivities are centered in Setúbal from May 20 to May 24, Madeira's celebrations promise a rich program of activities that highlight both local and national maritime traditions.
