Hiking Incident at Pico Ruivo
On May 9, 2026, the Volunteer Firefighters of Santana were dispatched to rescue a 28-year-old English tourist who injured her ankle while hiking on the trail at Pico Ruivo, one of Madeira's highest peaks. The rescue operation, involving six responders and two vehicles, took approximately three hours. The injured tourist was subsequently transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further treatment.
Disturbance in Funchal
In a separate incident, the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters were called to Avenida Sá Carneiro in Funchal on the night of May 8, 2026. A 33-year-old French tourist caused a public disturbance near the balcony area and was assisted by emergency services and the Public Security Police (PSP). She was also transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital.
Boating Accident in Caniçal
Earlier on May 8, 2026, a 76-year-old tourist was injured when a tourist boat capsized at the Marina da Quinta do Lorde in Caniçal, due to rough sea conditions. The Municipal Firefighters of Machico responded to the incident, and the tourist was taken to the Machico Health Center for emergency care.
