Recent adverse weather conditions in Madeira have led to multiple incidents of landslides and structural damages, impacting local communities and prompting swift action from emergency services.

Multiple Incidents Across Madeira

In Câmara de Lobos, two landslides occurred on March 20th, 2026. The first incident took place in the afternoon on Estrada Padre António Silvino Andrade near Cabo Girão, where rocks fell on a plot of land adjacent to a house. The second landslide happened later that evening on a path at Estrada da Areia in Rancho, following the collapse of a retaining wall.

Meanwhile, in the Curral das Freiras, two landslides were reported earlier in the morning, which disrupted local roadways. These were promptly cleared by the Municipal Civil Protection and the Regional Road Directorate, ensuring minimal disruption to traffic.

Structural Hazards and Emergency Response

The adverse weather also led to a dangerous situation in São Gonçalo, where zinc sheets on a structure threatened to fall onto nearby homes. This was swiftly managed by the Madeira Voluntary Firefighters.

Additionally, part of a building's facade fell onto the street at Rua de São Filipe. Fortunately, both situations were resolved without further incident.

Personal Injuries Amidst the Chaos

In a separate incident, a 65-year-old man was injured after falling from a two-meter-high wall on the promenade near Socorridos. He sustained head injuries and arm pain and was taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça by the Câmara de Lobos Voluntary Firefighters.

These incidents highlight the importance of emergency preparedness and the efficient response of local services to natural and structural hazards.
