Câmara de Lobos and its surrounding areas in Madeira Island have recently been affected by multiple incidents, including landslides and safety hazards, due to adverse weather conditions. Emergency services have been actively responding to these events to ensure public safety.
Landslides in Câmara de Lobos
On March 20, 2026, two separate landslides occurred in Câmara de Lobos. The first incident took place in the afternoon on Estrada Padre António Silvino Andrade near Cabo Girão, where rocks fell onto a property. The second landslide happened later on Estrada da Areia in the Rancho area, caused by the collapse of a terrace wall.
Incidents in Curral das Freiras
Earlier on the same day, two landslides were reported in Curral das Freiras. These incidents temporarily hindered road access, but swift action by the Municipal Civil Protection and the Regional Directorate of Roads ensured the roads were cleared promptly.
Safety Concerns in Other Areas
In São Gonçalo, emergency services were alerted to the risk of zinc sheets falling from a structure, as well as a building facade collapsing onto a road on Rua de São Filipe. Both situations were resolved without any injuries.
Fall Incident at Socorridos Promenade
Additionally, a 65-year-old man suffered a fall from a two-meter-high wall at the Socorridos Promenade. He was treated for head abrasions and arm pain before being transported to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to exercise caution, especially given the ongoing adverse weather conditions impacting infrastructure and safety across the island.
