In the early hours of April 2, 2026, Madeira witnessed a series of emergencies that kept the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal on their toes. From car accidents to acts of aggression, the island's emergency services were actively engaged across different locations.
Car Flip on the Expressway
At approximately 3 a.m., the fire brigade was dispatched to a car flip at the entrance of the expressway in São Martinho, heading towards Câmara de Lobos-Funchal. Despite significant damage to the vehicle, no injuries were reported.
Multiple Assaults in Funchal
Around 2 a.m., two men aged in their 30s and 40s were assaulted near the São Martinho roundabout. Suffering cuts and bruises, they were promptly attended to by emergency services. Later, at 5 a.m., another assault occurred on Avenida Zarco, involving a man in his 50s who was reportedly intoxicated. The PSP, Portugal's public security police, was involved, and all injured parties were taken to Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Vehicle Fire Incident
Adding to the tumultuous night, a separate incident occurred on April 1, 2026, at 5:35 a.m. when a car was completely destroyed by fire on Caminho Velho da Chamorra. Eleven firefighters and three vehicles were deployed to control the blaze.
