João Silva, a passionate scout from Madeira, has achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the Deputy National Scout Leader in Portugal. This historic election took place on May 10, 2026, during the National Conference of the Associação dos Escoteiros de Portugal (AEP).
At the age of 25, Silva will lead the Department of Communication and Image, aligning perfectly with his academic and professional background. He has been a scout since the age of eight and is known for his fervent dedication to the scouting movement, particularly within the Madeira region.
Silva, who volunteers at Group 101 in Santa Luzia, Madeira, has played a pivotal role in various scouting activities both locally and internationally. His election is seen as a recognition of the dynamic work being done in Madeira to cultivate young leaders and promote regional identity at a national level.
If scouting transforms lives, that transformation must be socially recognized," Silva stated, emphasizing his commitment to connecting with the youth and enhancing the visibility of scouting.
The AEP, founded in 1922, is the oldest scouting association in Portugal and a founding member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. It boasts thousands of members across the country, with Madeira being one of the most active regions.
