Madeira's Pedro Coelho Advocates for Fishing and Agricultural Support

Pedro Coelho, a prominent deputy from Madeira, recently engaged in a significant dialogue with the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries during a regimental hearing. The focus of the discussion was on two critical issues for Madeira's economy: the financial envelope of the POSEI program for the Autonomous Regions and the renewal of the black scabbardfish fleet.

POSEI, the Program of Options Specifically Relating to Remoteness and Insularity, is crucial for supporting the agricultural and fishing sectors in Madeira, an outermost region of the European Union. Coelho highlighted a positive development with the European Parliament approving an interim report on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028-2034, which includes specific financing for outermost regions (ORs).

The report, which marks a shift from its initial draft that did not recognize ORs, now ensures dedicated funding for POSEI, including specific allocations for aquaculture and fishing. Coelho urged the Minister to advocate for this positive discrimination to benefit Madeira, emphasizing the need for regional authorities to be involved in the design and execution of these funds.

Regarding the fishing sector, Coelho argued for specific allocations, opposing the dilution of funds into broader instruments. He stressed the importance of regional authorities' involvement and advocated for increased fishing quotas for ORs, acknowledging their reliance on artisanal fishing and its economic significance.

Coelho also addressed the stalled renewal process of the black scabbardfish fleet in Brussels, a critical issue for Madeira's fishing industry.
