The community of Madeira Island is united in grief as it bids farewell to three cherished individuals: Teresa Mendes de Azevedo Fernandes, José Fernando Gonçalves, and Cândida Lourença de Freitas, whose funerals are scheduled for April 8, 2026.

Madeira Island, known for its vibrant culture and close-knit communities, is currently mourning the loss of three beloved residents. Teresa Mendes de Azevedo Fernandes, José Fernando Gonçalves, and Cândida Lourença de Freitas have passed away, leaving behind a legacy of cherished memories for their families and friends.

Teresa Mendes de Azevedo Fernandes

The funeral of Teresa Mendes de Azevedo Fernandes is scheduled to take place on April 8, 2026. The procession will commence from the Hospital Dr. Nélio at 1:00 PM, heading to the chapel at the cemetery of Nossa Senhora das Angústias, São Martinho. A mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM, followed by cremation. Her children, Manuel, Domingos, Maria Teresa, and António, along with other family members, will be honoring her memory.

José Fernando Gonçalves

José Fernando Gonçalves, affectionately known as the brother of 'Zeca taxista,' will be laid to rest on the same day. His funeral procession will leave the Hospital Dr. João de Almada at 9:30 AM, proceeding to the chapel of the cemetery in Câmara de Lobos. A mass is scheduled for 10:30 AM, followed by his burial. His wife Rita, siblings, and extended family express their gratitude to the medical staff of Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for their compassionate care.

Cândida Lourença de Freitas

Cândida Lourença de Freitas’ funeral will occur on April 8, 2026, as well. The funeral procession will begin from the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, São Martinho, at 12:30 PM, moving to the parish church of Bom Jesus, Ponta Delgada, where a mass will be held at 2:00 PM. Her family, including her children and grandchildren, will be present to commemorate her life.

As the island bids farewell to these esteemed members, the families have expressed deep gratitude for the support and condolences received from the community. The collective mourning underscores the tight-knit fabric of Madeira's society, where personal losses are felt by all.
