In a significant development for Madeira's infrastructure and public safety, the regional government has announced a reversal of its initial decision regarding the Seixal infrastructure project. This decision comes after mounting pressure from local authorities, the Socialist Party (PS), and residents who have raised concerns about frequent rock falls posing serious risks to commuters in the area.
The announcement was made by CĂ©lia Pessegueiro, the president of PS-Madeira, who emphasized that the government's change of heart was largely due to persistent advocacy from the local government, particularly the mayor of Porto Moniz, as well as ongoing pressure from the public and the PS. Previously, the government had cited budgetary constraints as a reason for not addressing the safety hazards in Seixal, opting instead to allocate funds to other projects, such as golf courses.
CĂ©lia Pessegueiro criticized the regional government's priorities, highlighting a recent incident where a severe injury occurred due to rock falls in the area. She argued that the funds should have been directed towards critical safety measures rather than non-essential projects.
The regional government has now committed to constructing a protective structure, often referred to as a 'false tunnel', to mitigate the dangers posed by falling rocks. However, Pessegueiro expressed skepticism about the follow-through on this promise, recalling previous unfulfilled commitments.
Amidst these developments, Pessegueiro also addressed accusations of political exploitation leveled against her by Pedro Rodrigues, the regional secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure. She challenged Rodrigues to publicly disclose any viable safety solutions she allegedly failed to propose during her tenure as mayor.
For Madeira, a popular tourist destination, ensuring the safety of its roads is crucial not only for the well-being of its residents but also for maintaining its appeal to visitors.
