The Lar de Santa Isabel serves as a perfect example of alternatives to in-home elderly care, underscoring its importance in Madeira's social care landscape.

The Lar de Santa Isabel, located in Madeira, has been praised as a "perfect example" of alternatives to in-home elderly care. Recently, Paula Margarido, the Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Work, and Youth, visited the facility, highlighting its significant role in providing elderly care solutions beyond the traditional in-home support.

Opened in 1987, the establishment currently accommodates 63 residents and supports an additional 9 individuals through its Day Center services. The facility exemplifies how comprehensive care can be delivered in a community setting, ensuring that elderly residents receive the necessary support while maintaining social connections.

During her visit on March 16, 2026, Paula Margarido was accompanied by Nivalda Gonçalves, President of the Madeira Social Security Institute, and Agostinho Batista, President of the Monte Parish Council. Their presence underscored the importance of such facilities in the region's social infrastructure.

While the priority remains to keep the elderly within their own homes, Margarido acknowledged that this is not always feasible for everyone. Facilities like Lar de Santa Isabel offer a crucial alternative, providing a safe and supportive environment for those who cannot be cared for at home.

The visit and the resulting discussions are part of ongoing efforts to improve elderly care options in Madeira, ensuring that the aging population receives comprehensive and compassionate support.
