The JPP has criticized the regional government's plan to address recurring landslides in Seixal, Madeira, calling for urgent and comprehensive intervention to ensure road safety.

The Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) party has voiced significant concerns over the Madeira regional government's proposed solution for the landslides in Seixal, Porto Moniz. The party's representative, João Jesus, criticized the decision to reinstall a support net in the João Delgado and Pedra areas, insisting that a more robust and urgent intervention is required.

According to Jesus, the support net, which had been installed previously, proved ineffective against the frequent landslides that plague the region. The JPP believes that merely reinstalling the same solution will not address the root of the problem, which poses ongoing risks to road users and local residents.

Background on Seixal Landslides

Seixal, a coastal area in the northwestern part of Madeira Island, is notorious for its geological instability, which often leads to landslides, particularly during heavy rainfall. This has created a persistent challenge for local infrastructure and safety.

The regional government's current approach involves reinstating a previously failed solution—installing a support net designed to catch falling debris. However, this method has not stood the test of time, as evidenced by its previous near-total destruction due to continuous landslides.

JPP's Call for Comprehensive Solutions

João Jesus argues that the situation requires more than just temporary fixes. The JPP is advocating for a comprehensive geological assessment and the development of a long-term plan that could include reinforcing the cliffs or rerouting the road to ensure public safety.

This call for action is not only about addressing immediate safety concerns but also about ensuring the sustainable development of the area, which is essential for both locals and the tourism industry that Madeira heavily relies on.

"The regional government's recurring approach of reinstalling the same failed measures is not sufficient. We need a sustainable and effective solution to protect our people and our economy," said João Jesus, JPP representative.
