JPP seeks answers after Social Security accounts refusal

JPP demanded explanations from the Regional Government after the Tribunal de Contas again refused to approve the accounts of the Instituto de Segurança Social da Madeira.
According to public information cited by JPP, the Madeira section of the Tribunal de Contas refused to homologate the institute's accounts for 2023 and 2024. The party said this was the fifth consecutive refusal, following the same type of decision for 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Diário de Notícias Madeira reported that auditors identified limitations that prevented the court from presenting a true and appropriate picture of the institute's financial situation. Auditors were unable to reconcile balances of clients, contributors and users amounting to €63.7 million, according to the report.
JPP said the situation increases public distrust and has a strong social impact, particularly on current and future pensioners. Lina Pereira, identified by Diário de Notícias Madeira as president of the largest opposition party, questioned how much confidence Madeirans can have in Social Security and whether they can trust they will receive pensions now and in the future.
The party said the Regional Government should provide rigorous public explanations that people can understand, rather than merely publicly contesting what the Tribunal de Contas said. JPP said it would make a responsible and transparent assessment to clarify the situation and calm the population.
