Funchal Signs Multi-Year Cultural Contracts with Local Associations

In a significant move to bolster the cultural landscape of Madeira, the Funchal City Council (CMF) has entered into multi-year contracts with 17 local cultural associations. The signing ceremony took place on May 19, 2026, at the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, a key venue for the arts in Madeira.

These agreements, spanning from 2026 to 2029, are valued at 261,000 euros annually, culminating in over one million euros by the end of the term. This initiative aims to provide these cultural entities with a stable financial foundation, allowing for enhanced planning and execution of their programs.

Jorge Carvalho, the president of the Funchal City Council, emphasized the importance of these contracts in promoting cultural activities and ensuring long-term stability. He acknowledged the contributions of cultural agents and highlighted the council's commitment to supporting cultural development in the region.

"This new format of four-year contracts allows for better planning and organization," Carvalho stated. "It offers stability to our cultural partners, enabling them to know their financial situation in advance and plan their activities more effectively."

The CMF's commitment to culture extends beyond these agreements. In April, additional support was approved for 25 other cultural entities, amounting to approximately 200,000 euros. The city also invests in major cultural events such as the Funchal Jazz Festival and the Book Fair, further demonstrating its dedication to fostering a vibrant cultural environment.

These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance the cultural offerings of Madeira, making it an attractive destination for both residents and tourists.
