Funchal named ‘Hidden Gem’ in Canadian travellers’ awards

Funchal was named "Hidden Gem" in the second edition of Air Canada Vacations' Travellers' Top Picks Awards. The 2026 winners were announced on Wednesday.
The "Hidden Gem" category is for destinations considered discoveries by travellers.
Air Canada Vacations invites customers and Canadian travellers to choose destinations and experiences that interest them for future trips. The distinction places Funchal among destinations that drew the curiosity and attention of Canadian travellers planning future travel.
Eduardo Jesus, regional secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture and president of the Madeira Promotion Association, said the result was particularly relevant because it came directly from travellers' participation. He said the award gives the destination visibility, reflects interest in places with their own identity and differentiated experiences, and encourages the continuation of Madeira's promotional strategy in the Canadian market.
Other winners included Riviera Maya in "Beach Vacation", Cinque Terre in "Bucket List", Santiago in "Foodie Favourite", Rio de Janeiro in "Adventure Travel", Prague in "Arts & Culture", Phuket in "Wellness", Paris in "Romance", New York in "City Break" and Nassau in "Family".
Madeira is seeking to strengthen its visibility in Canada and reach new audiences.
