In celebration of International Women's Day, observed on March 8, the Câmara Municipal do Funchal honored 20 women on March 16 for their significant contributions to the community. This event was part of the Council for Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination's activities, aiming to recognize the achievements of women in various professional fields.
The ceremony, attended by various entities, highlighted the women's accomplishments in literature, theater, music, health, education, economy, hospitality, fashion design, media, politics, sports, public transportation, security, police and military forces, and environmental sectors. These women were celebrated for their visible and anonymous contributions, setting an example for the community.
Jorge Carvalho, the Mayor of Funchal, emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and commended the women for being exemplary figures in society. He noted the societal progress that has allowed such recognitions and stressed the need to uphold these values for continued community development.
There are two ways to live: those who seize opportunities and those who merely recognize them.
This initiative, first launched two years ago, is intended to be a biennial event, aiming to highlight the vital role women play in the social, cultural, and economic development of Funchal. Carvalho's message to the awardees recognized their merit and contributions towards building a more just, inclusive, and equal society.
