In a series of unrelated incidents occurring over the past two days, emergency services in Funchal have been actively engaged in ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and visitors. The local fire and rescue teams were called to address a restaurant fire, an assault on Avenida do Mar, and a minor fire in an apartment.
Restaurant Fire in Zona Velha
On the evening of May 5th, a fire broke out in the exhaust system of a restaurant located in the Zona Velha, the Old Town of Funchal. The incident prompted a swift response from both the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses (BVM) and the Bombeiros Sapadores do Funchal. Eight firefighters from BVM, equipped with two vehicles, were on the scene to manage the situation. Fortunately, the fire was quickly controlled, and ventilation was conducted to ensure safety.
Assault on Avenida do Mar
Earlier on the same day, the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses were called to respond to an assault on a man in his 50s on Avenida do Mar. The incident occurred near the popular São Tiago beach area. The victim sustained a head injury and was promptly transported to the Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça for medical care.
Kitchen Fire Averted in Residential Area
On May 4th, a potentially dangerous situation was averted thanks to the quick actions of the local firefighting units. A cooking pot left unattended on the stove in an apartment on Caminho de Santa Quitéria led to a call-out involving 19 firefighters and six vehicles. Ten firefighters from the Bombeiros Sapadores and nine from the BVM worked together to prevent the situation from escalating.
These events highlight the critical role played by Funchal's emergency services in maintaining public safety. The timely and coordinated responses to these incidents were crucial in minimizing damage and ensuring the safety of all involved.
