A series of incidents have kept Madeira's emergency services busy, including a car fire on the highway, a tourist rescue on a levada, and a bus passenger accident.

Madeira Island's emergency services have had a busy couple of days attending to a series of incidents that highlight the importance of safety measures for both residents and visitors. These incidents include a car fire on the highway, a tourist rescue during a levada walk, and a bus passenger accident.

Car Fire on the Highway

At around 16:00 on December 29, 2025, a car caught fire on the highway in the Boa Nova area, heading towards Caniço from Funchal. The quick response of the vehicle owner, who used a fire extinguisher, helped put out the fire before the Madeirense Volunteer Firefighters arrived on the scene.

Tourist Rescue on Levada dos Balcões

Earlier that day, at 15:42, emergency services were called to the Levada dos Balcões, located in Ribeiro Frio, to assist a 57-year-old German tourist. The tourist had fallen unconscious due to hypoglycemia but was initially aided by two doctors who were also on the trail. Six rescue team members transported the tourist to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital after he regained consciousness.

Bus Passenger Accident in Funchal

On the previous day, December 28, an incident occurred at Avenida do Infante, Funchal, involving a male bus passenger in his 50s. The passenger, who was reportedly intoxicated, fell while disembarking from the bus. He was treated at the scene and subsequently transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital for further care.

These incidents highlight the vigilance and preparedness of Madeira's emergency services, ensuring the safety and well-being of both residents and tourists.
