In a fervent appeal to the regional government, José Manuel Rodrigues, the president of CDS-PP Madeira, has emphasized the critical need for establishing a Therapeutic Community in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. This initiative, which Rodrigues has championed for over three decades, is becoming increasingly vital amid escalating drug dependency issues that plague local communities.
Rodrigues' statements were made following a visit to the Casa de Saúde São João de Deus, marking the conclusion of a comprehensive 45-day tour of mental health institutions organized by the Juventude Popular with support from the CDS-PP. During this visit, Rodrigues highlighted the impact of modern societal pressures, including a competitive lifestyle and the adverse effects of certain technologies, on mental health and substance abuse.
A particular concern for Rodrigues is the rise in consumption of new psychoactive substances among young people, notably a drug known as Bloom. This alarming trend underscores the necessity for dedicated therapeutic facilities to address and mitigate these challenges effectively.
In addition to advocating for the Therapeutic Community, CDS-PP Madeira is actively engaging with various institutions to develop legislation on 'protected employment'. This initiative aims to facilitate the social reintegration of individuals leaving mental health facilities, enabling them to work part-time while receiving public incentives.
Rodrigues reaffirmed his commitment to lobbying the Regional Government for these critical measures, viewing them as essential to combat the drug crisis and support affected individuals.
