This event offers free entry and two guided tours of the iconic Casa dos Azulejos, aiming to underscore the significance of Portuguese tile heritage and the urgent need for its preservation.
The celebration at Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas serves as a part of a broader initiative to protect and promote Portuguese tiles, a rich cultural legacy that has faced continuous deterioration over the years. This initiative finds its roots in the SOS Azulejo Project, launched in 2007 by the Polícia Judiciária Museum. The project has seen collaborations with several institutions, including the Association of Portuguese Municipalities, the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage, and various universities, fostering a collective effort to safeguard this art form.
In 2017, the Portuguese Parliament recognized the significance of this heritage by establishing National Tile Day through Resolution n.º 144/2017.
