Authorities in Câmara de Lobos are closely monitoring a significant landslide in Curral das Freiras to ensure public safety and prevent water flow disruptions.

On March 27, 2026, a large landslide occurred in the area of Seara Velha, located in Curral das Freiras, a parish in Câmara de Lobos, Madeira Island. The landslide has deposited debris into the bed of Ribeira dos Socorridos, prompting immediate action from local authorities.

The Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos, in collaboration with the Municipal Civil Protection Service, has activated monitoring mechanisms to ensure constant vigilance over the affected area. This includes ensuring the water flow in Ribeira dos Socorridos remains unobstructed to prevent potential flooding.

Mayor Celso Bettencourt, who oversees civil protection, emphasized that while there is no current cause for alarm, precautionary measures are in place. This involves continuous technical assessments of the slope's stability and the watercourse's condition.

The local fire department, Bombeiros Voluntários de Câmara de Lobos, reported that no injuries have occurred as a result of the landslide. However, as a precaution, a nearby household was advised to relocate temporarily.

Efforts to monitor and assess the situation are ongoing, with technical support provided by the Regional Directorate of Social Equipment and Conservation, the Regional Civil Protection Service, and the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory.

Curral das Freiras, nestled in a deep valley on Madeira Island, is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, known for its stunning landscapes and traditional chestnut festival. This makes the safety and accessibility of the area a priority for authorities.
