Funchal experienced a hectic night with multiple incidents, including a car rollover, assaults, and fires. Despite the chaos, no serious injuries were reported.

In the early hours of April 2, 2026, the city of Funchal on Madeira Island witnessed a series of emergency incidents that kept local firefighters and police on high alert.

Car Rollover Incident

At around 3 AM, the Funchal Sapadores Firefighters were dispatched to a car rollover at the entrance of the rapid road in São Martinho, heading from Câmara de Lobos towards Funchal. Fortunately, there were no injuries, although the vehicle sustained significant damage.

Early Morning Assaults

Just an hour before the rollover, at approximately 2 AM, the same firefighting unit responded to two separate assaults near the São Martinho roundabout. Two men, aged in their 30s and 40s, suffered cuts and bruises. Later, at 5 AM, another assault was reported on Avenida Zarco, involving a man in his 50s who appeared intoxicated. All victims were transported to the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, and the police are investigating these incidents.

Fires in Caniço and Caminho Velho da Chamorra

The night also saw two fire-related incidents. In Caniço, a fire on Estrada das Fontes prompted the mobilization of three firefighting corporations. Meanwhile, in the early hours of April 1, a separate incident involved a car completely destroyed by fire on Caminho Velho da Chamorra, requiring 11 firefighters and three vehicles to control the blaze.

Despite the multiple emergencies, the coordinated efforts of the Funchal Sapadores ensured that all incidents were managed efficiently, with no serious injuries reported.
