11th Heart Week Brings Health Awareness to Funchal's Municipal Markets
Madeira GuideThe 11th Heart Week, from May 18 to 22, aims to raise awareness about cardiovascular health in Funchal's municipal markets through free screenings and health-promoting activities.
Funchal's municipal markets will host the 11th Heart Week from May 18 to 22, an initiative by the Câmara Municipal focusing on cardiovascular disease prevention. This annual event serves as a platform to educate both locals and tourists on the importance of heart health.
Throughout the five-day event, free blood pressure and cholesterol screenings will be offered at Mercado dos Lavradores from 8 AM to 1 PM, in collaboration with Madeira Quality Care, Medical Emergency Services, and Clube Naval do Funchal. On May 22, screenings will also be available at Mercado da Penteada from 9 AM to 12:30 PM, supported by Farmácia Nova da Penteada.
The initiative not only aims to promote health but also to invigorate the local markets as essential hubs for fresh, local produce. The markets will also host activities such as health workshops, awareness campaigns, and fun educational activities, designed to engage the community.
As part of the event, a special gastronomic fair will take place on May 21, challenging participants to create heart-healthy dishes under the theme "Feed the Heart." This encourages both residents and visitors to explore healthier culinary options while enjoying local flavors.
The Heart Week initiative underscores the importance of early detection and lifestyle changes in preventing cardiovascular diseases. It highlights Funchal's commitment to public health and community engagement, making it a significant event for the city.
