Funchal

Three hours out of Cais 8 in Funchal after dolphins and whales on a wide catamaran, with a swim stop off Cabo Girão when the weather allows.

A catamaran, not a rigid inflatable: a wide stable deck with seating, shade and a toilet, which is the difference between a four-to-seven-year-old enjoying the morning and enduring it. The trade is that it is slower than the RIB operators, covers less water and can miss animals the fast boats reach, and three hours with a large group aboard means competition for the best places at the rail. This is also the Funchal boat that publishes its child pricing plainly, which makes it the easy one to plan around.

Worth knowing: The no-sighting policy is a free second trip and not a refund, so do not book it for your last day. Check-in is compulsory thirty minutes before departure.
