Fifteen minutes in a glass cabin from the Funchal seafront up 560 metres to Monte, which most small children treat as the attraction rather than the transport.
Gardens and rooftops pass underneath close enough to point at, and it is quieter and smoother than nervous parents expect. Staff hold the cabin while a pushchair is loaded. At the top are Monte, the church, the tropical garden and the toboggan run, so the ride is the start of the afternoon rather than the whole of it.
Worth knowing: Be at the lower station when it opens at 08:45; by half past ten the ticket queue is the difference between a morning and half a morning. An e-ticket skips the window but not the boarding line.
